2.0 INSTRUCTIONS

3.0 PROJECT 2 — THEMED SCENE-BASED MODELLING

Instructions:
  1. Model a scene-based environment.
  2. Get as many references (i.e. blueprints, images) for your selected object.
  3. Software: Blender.
  4. Requirements:
    1. The object must be assigned the appropriate material and texture.
    2. Render the final image with EEVEE / Cycles as the rendering machine.
    3. Composition: Diorama / Isometric.
    4. Output Size: 720p (1280 × 720).
    5. Format: PNG.

3.1 RESEARCH

Figure 3.1-1: Mood Board, Week 10 (30/11/24)

I'm doing a cyberpunk-themed room for this project. I like the sharp, angular structure of cyberpunk builds as they look great aesthetically and would be practical when modelling (my computer will thank me😅). The neon lights would also look great when rendered, though I'll have to find a different way of making the lights because the rendered lights on my robot (Project 1) looked like a lens flare instead of glowing in Viewport Shading.

3.2 MODELLING

Figure 3.2-1: Original Layout, Week 11 (04/12/24)

Figure 3.2-2: Updated Layout, Week 12 (10/12/24)

My initial plan was to keep the bed in the main room and make the secret compartment a storage unit for random junk. Midway through, I felt like there was already a lot of storage space, and that the secret compartment shouldn't be wasted on something so boring, so I made some changes:
  • Put the bed in the secret compartment — The space is just big enough to be a mini bedroom.
  • Turn the original bed into an eating area.

Figure 3.2-3: Details, Week 12 (10/12/24)

Once I finalised the layout, all that was left was to add details like grids, light features, pipes, etc.

3.3 COLOUR & MATERIALS

Figure 3.3-1: Colour & Materials, Week 12 (11/12/24)

I kept most of the diorama dark grey because I wanted the neon lights to stand out. Other than the metal elements and lights, the rest of the diorama uses the basic material assigned by Blender.

3.4 LIGHTING & COMPOSITION

4.0 REFLECTION

I had a lot of fun doing this project. Dioramas are an interest of mine, and I've been meaning to create one of my own for some time. I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome, though I wished I made some parts more detailed. 8/10 experience.
