TABLE OF CONTENTS

1.0 LECTURES

*Sidenote: All lectures have been completed in Exercises.

2.0 INSTRUCTIONS

3.0 PROJECT 1 — HARD SURFACE MODELLING

Instructions:
  1. Choose a hard surface object to model from any of these categories:
    1. Vehicle.
    2. Weapon.
    3. Robot.
    4. Machine.
  2. Get as many references (i.e. blueprints, images) for your selected object.
  3. Software: Blender.
  4. Requirements:
    1. The object must be assigned the appropriate material and texture.
    2. Render the final image with EEVEE / Cycles as the rendering machine.
    3. Output Size: 720p (1280 × 720).
    4. Format: PNG.

3.1 RESEARCH

Figure 3.1-1: Mood Board, Week 6 (31/10/24)

3.2 MODELLING

Figure 3.2-1: Head, Week 8 (14/11/24)

Figure 3.2-2: Neck, Week 8 (14/11/24)

Figure 3.2-3: Body & Legs, Week 8 (16/11/24)

Figure 3.2-4: Arms, Week 8 (16/11/24)

The arms look a little funny now, but this is to make assigning materials easier. They will be rotated later on.

3.3 COLOUR & MATERIALS

Figure 3.3-1: Materials — Worn Metal, Week 9 (18/11/24)

This worn metal texture will be used on the majority of the robot.

Figure 3.3-2: Materials — Dark Metal, Week 9 (18/11/24)

Figure 3.3-3: Materials — Orange Metal, Week 9 (18/11/24)
*Sidenote: It looks very dark here because of the lighting

Figure 3.3-4: Materials — Light Metal, Week 9 (18/11/24)

I derived the dark metal, orange metal, and light metal textures by changing the base colour value of the worn metal texture. I also made the light metal a bit shinier. This is to give the robot some subtle variety.

Figure 3.3-5: Materials — Glass & Blue Light, Week 9 (18/11/24)

Figure 3.3-6: Materials — Plastic Tubes, Week 9 (18/11/24)

Figure 3.3-7: Materials — Rubber Wheels, Week 9 (18/11/24)

The rest of the materials were made by varying the Surface and Specular in the Materials panel.

3.4 LIGHTING & COMPOSITION

Figure 3.4-1: HDRI, Week 9 (18/11/24)

I'm using EEVEE for the rendering machine and this auto shop HDRI from Poly Haven to help with the lighting.

Figure 3.4-2: Photoshoot Set-Up, Week 9 (18/11/24)

Figure 3.4-3: Camera Perspective, Week 9 (18/11/24)

3.5 FINAL SUBMISSION

4.0 REFLECTION

Very time-consuming.😅 The process of making the materials was a pain but it brought the model's overall look together so I'm not too annoyed by that. Modelling the robot didn't take as long as I thought (despite how complicated it looked), as it was a matter of repeating and rearranging different elements.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the outcome.💯
