2.0 LECTURES

*Sidenote: All lectures have been completed in Exercises.

3.0 FINAL PROJECT — INFOGRAPHIC VIDEO ANIMATION

Instructions:
  1. Based on the FLIP presentation topic agreed upon (any topic), produce an animated infographic video with the purpose of:
    1. Creating awareness (e.g. "Global Warming", "Recycling"). OR
    2. Explaining a process (e.g. "how to" video). OR
    3. Defining a concept (e.g. "What is Fast Fashion").
  2. Your video should:
    1. Show casualty.
    2. Multivariate graphics and visuals.
    3. Integrate words, numbers, images, and charts.
    4. Not de-quantify.
  3. Requirements:
    1. Software: Any time-based software.
    2. Resolution: 1920 × 1080 px.
    3. Time: 1.5–3 minutes.
  4. Submission: Post on YouTube (unlisted).

3.1 RESEARCH & FLIP PRESENTATION

Figure 3.1-1: FLIP Presentation — Stereotypes Against Gen Z, Week 2 (10/02/25)
*Unfortunately, no recording.

TASK DELEGATION:

  • Introduction: Edita (research, presentation).
  • Why This Topic: May Sheen (research), Yan Ling (research, presentation).
  • Objectives: Emily (research, presentation), Zi Qi (research).
  • Target Audience: Graciella (research, presentation).
  • Key Information & Data: Cindy (research), J Xin (research), Aisya (research, presentation).
  • Conclusion: Aisya (presentation).

Based on Mr Shamsul and Mr Fauzi's recommendation, we narrowed down our target audience to working people so that our video will be more specific.

Figure 3.1-2: Miro, Week 4 (24/02/25)

Figure 3.1-3: Animation Style Reference, Week 4 (24/02/25)

We had a poll deciding what style of animation and title we would go with. The results:
  • Title: Workplace Survival 101: Gen Z Edition.
  • Animation Style Reference: It was a close decision between #1 and #3, but #3 won by a smidge. No line art, solid shapes, with sketchy background elements. The colour palette for #3 is a bit dull, so we went with brighter, more saturated colours like #1.

We also split our tasks while we were at it. Yan Ling and I will be editors. Yan Ling will gather the background music and sound effects, I will put everything together.

3.2 PRE-PRODUCTION

Figure 3.2-1: Script, Week 5 (05/03/25)
Written by: J Xin, Graciella, Aisya

Figure 3.2-2: Storyboard, Week 6 (10/03/25)
Storyboarded by: Cindy, May Sheen | Compiled by: Emily

3.3 PRODUCTION

Figure 3.3-1: Animation WIP, Week 7 (21/03/25)
Animated by: Edita, Zi Qi

Figure 3.3-2: Example of Audio & Video Not Synching, Week 7 (21/03/25)

I was sent part of the animation to edit as the other half would take some time. Unfortunately, the animation was done before the voiceover was edited, meaning some scenes were too long or too short when overlayed with the V/O. The animation will need to be adjusted so that the audio and video sync up.

3.4 POST-PRODUCTION

3.4.1 VOICEOVER

Figure 3.4.1-1: Voiceover, Week 7 (21/03/25)

First order of business is to stitch together the V/O (done by May Sheen). I fiddled around with the speed of the V/O until satisfactory. 175% seems to be the limit of how fast it can go before the words become illegible. I kept the speed at 165% and pitched down May's voice in Pitch Shifter to prevent her from sounding like a chipmunk.

Figure 3.4.1-3: Local Uni Student Has a Heart Attack, More at 10, Week 7 (22/03/25)

Midnight crisis in which none of my Premiere Pro files and backups can be opened. Adobe really must hate me because I'm already using the latest version of Premiere Pro. Thank goodness I exported the audio as a safety measure.🫠 The only way of opening my file risks corrupting the assets, so I cut my losses and continued working on a new file. Which also had the same exact problem once I closed it.

I will throttle someone if this happens again. At least the V/O is completed. I sent Zi Qi the edited V/O so that she could adjust the animation.

Figure 3.4.1-5: CapCut, Week 7 (23/03/25)

I wasn't going to risk the same issue happening again, so at my group mates' suggestion, I transferred my progress to CapCut. I haven't used this software before, but the learning curve was moderate as the layout is quite user-friendly.

3.4.2 BACKGROUND MUSIC & SOUND EFFECTS

Figure 3.4.2-1: BGM & SFX, Week 7 (23/03/25)
Audio Gathered by: Yan Ling | Spreadsheet
*Not all audio in the spreadsheet were used.

Originally, the plan was to use Calm Loop (by DragonTrance) during the summary of Gen Z's traits scene (storyboard panels #22–25). However, Calm Loop was too intense for a conclusion scene. The audio reminded me of old-school video game ambience, so I relocated it to the interview scene (storyboard panels #10–18), where the Old Man was grilling the Gen Z Worker.

As for the SFX, 80% of it was swiping and zooming sounds for the transitions and when important text pop up. I try to keep only necessary SFX that convey information in the video, such as an old man grumbling and a baby babbling during the age comparison scene (storyboard panel #3).

3.4.3 END CREDITS & FINALISING

Figure 3.4.3-1: End Credits, Week 7 (23/03/25)
Animated by: Emily

Made an end credits sequence in Canva. The video is already quite long, so I kept it brief.

Figure 3.4.3-2: Transitions, Week 7 (23/03/25)

The animation team already added transitions between scenes, so the only ones I added were a fade-in-from-black at the start and a slide-down to connect the animation to the end credits.

4.0 FEEDBACK

4.1 WEEK 2

Specific Feedback (Mr Shamsul & Mr Fauzi):
  • Very interesting topic. Good preparation.
  • Target audiences should be more niche so that your infographic can be more specific. The target audience is good because it puts down a POV for the lecturers.
  • The final infographic can be tweaked to be something like “Survival Guide for Gen Z in Workplaces”, with the target audience being Gen Z.

4.2 WEEK 6

Specific Feedback (Mr Shamsul):
  • @ Characters: OK. Looks well constructed.
  • To-do: Start on the animation and voiceover.

5.0 REFLECTION

The animation and V/O not syncing was a major time loss that could've been avoided had we a better project management timeline at the start. How I managed to cram all of the editing into less than two days beats me. Despite the time crunch, I enjoyed doing the sound design. It is a logical type of art. Perhaps I will do sound design one day.
