1.0 INSTRUCTIONS

2.0 PROJECT 3 — FINAL PROJECT

Instructions:
  1. Produce a visual design outcome that reflects your interpretation and definition of "framing".
  2. Consider the cultural and aesthetic aspects of your design.

  • Sketching: Ying Ying, Velicia
  • Crafting: Emily, Velicia
  • Decorating: Emily, Ying Ying
  • Photoshoot: Ying Ying (photography), Velicia (modelling), Emily (editing)
2. KANZASHI OF THE PRESENT:
  • Sketching: Aisya, Lizzie
  • Crafting: Aisya, Lizzie
  • Decorating: Aisya, Lizzie
  • Photoshoot: Ying Ying (photography), Velicia (modelling), Emily (editing)
  • *Sidenote: Details of the creation process are in Aisya and Lizzie's blog, and the PPT.
3. PPT:
  • Kanzashi of the Past: Ying Ying, Emily, Velicia
  • Kanzashi of the Present: Aisya, Lizzie
  • Editing: Emily, Ying Ying
  • Presentation: All group members

2.2 SKETCHES

Figure 2.2-1: Sketches, Week 7 (19/03/24)
Initial Sketches: Ying Ying (Left), Velicia (Right)
Finalised Sketch: Ying Ying

We liked aspects of both the initial sketches (i.e. the decoration from Ying Ying's, and the flowers from Vel's), so we combined them to create the final look.

2.3 CRAFTING

Figure 2.3-1: Mock-ups, Week 8 (26/03/24)

Figure 2.3-2: Washi Paper, Week 8 (26/03/24)
Patterned and unpatterned
washi paper, measured and cut to size.

Figure 2.3-3: WIP, Week 8 (26/03/24)
Emily, Ying Ying, Velicia

Before starting on the final item, we made mock-ups using regular craft store origami paper. The outcomes were very fragile, and the uncoloured (white) side of the paper was showing. For the final product, we glued two layers of washi paper (fancy Japanese craft paper) together before folding, which you can see me painstakingly do in Figure 2.3-3.

Figure 2.3-4: Green-Red Flower VS White-Red Flower, Week 8 (27/03/24)

We made two variations for the main flower with different backing paper (one in green and one in white) to see how they would look with the two smaller flowers.

2.4 DECORATING & ASSEMBLY

Figure 2.4-1: Flower & Pearl Variations, Week 8 (27/03/24)

We did some variations for the main flower to see how different colours would work. Ultimately decided that the first variation (green-red flower, gold pearl) looked the most balanced.

Figure 2.4-2: With Filament VS Without Filament, Week 8 (27/03/24)

We also chose not to give the main flower filaments, since it made the kanzashi look very bulky / extended too far outwards.

Figure 2.4-3: Kanzashi Components, Week 8 (27/03/24)

After that, it was just a matter of assembling the various components.

2.5 PHOTOSHOOT

Unfortunately, the photoshoot took place rather late and I didn't want to be stuck in traffic, so I left Ying Ying and Vel with instructions on what to photograph (e.g. close-ups, on model) and edited the photos in Photoshop.

3.0 FEEDBACK

3.1 WEEK 7

Specific Feedback (Mr Asrizal): Everything's alright.

4.0 REFLECTION

So glad this project is over. My experience has been...extremely mixed. The bad parts, you could say, stood out much more.

You may have noticed a lack of contribution from a certain group member, particularly in this project. The remaining members and I have had a rough time communicating with him and getting him to be interested in the project. He seems to prefer living in his own world rather than participating in the group. Other than him, my other group members have been cooperative, active and competent. I could count on them to finish their workload and help me with the admin work. We came together as strangers and left as friends, which I consider the best part of this project. As for myself, I think I've done a relatively good job managing the group considering 1. this is my first time being a group leader, and 2. I was officially elected later in the project (TL;DR: Tao was originally the leader, I acted as his substitute until around Week 6).

Would I want to repeat this experience? No, absolutely not. But if I could do it all over again, I'd rather:
  1. Manage the group from day one. I feel like this would make everything much more efficient and simple.
  2. Have one less member. Having to fight to get one person on the same page as everyone else is unbelievably draining and morale-deflating. This is, unfortunately, the reality of group work.
  3. Prepare a consistent PPT template for all three projects. It's pretty obvious that the Project 1 PPT was made by a different person from the Project 2 and 3 PPTs.
Overall, I'd give this experience a 5/10. The highs were high and the lows were low, leaving me dangling somewhere in the middle.
