4.0 REFLECTION

WHAT HAVE I LEARNT IN THIS MODULE?
  • As one would expect from a module called Design Principles, I learnt about —you guessed it— design principles. What makes a composition appealing, what doesn't, how subtle change can influence one's perception of something... It's fascinating how much of design is actually psychological. The science behind art, if you will.
WHAT DID I ENJOY THE MOST?
  • Oddly enough, the constructive criticism. I like how clear and concise Dr Jinchi's feedback is. It's a refreshing change from the ambiguous and at times confusing feedback I've had from previous tutors. Her feedback makes me think critically about my designs without feeling discouraged — it's a hard balance to strike.
WHAT DID I NOT ENJOY THE MOST?
  • Finding out that some of my batch mates are copycats, and bad ones at that. It became apparent during the writing-based assignments (i.e. Task 1 and 2). It's one thing to look at my blog for inspiration, it's another to copy my lecture notes, brief recaps and writing word-for-word to the point where it's obviously not written by them when compared with their previous work. At least be creative with your stealing. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I'll take it that I've done well, but damn if it isn't annoying.
  • *Sidenote: This has nothing specifically to do with Design Principles. DP just helped with the realisation.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNT ABOUT MYSELF THROUGH THIS MODULE?
  • That I really like doom art :P Jokes aside, I've noticed a pattern in the creative media I consume. From books to games to videos, I gravitate towards dead worlds and bleak settings, to the point where it leaks out into my own creations. You are what you eat, I suppose.
WHAT HAS CHANGED AND WHAT HAS NOT IN MY LEARNING JOURNEY?
  • For the most part, I've stayed relatively the same. I learnt how to be more analytical and in-depth with my explanations. I've become more efficient at sketching now that I'm more familiar with Procreate. That seems to be about it.
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED IN THIS MODULE?
  • Nothing in particular, surprisingly. Even with thorough head-scratching, I can't think of anything to complain about. The module is well-paced, the atmosphere during class is positive, the assignment workload is stimulating but not soul-crushing, my instructor is attentive and easy to talk to — what more can I ask for?
