2.0 TASK 2 — VISUAL ANALYSIS
Instructions:
- Write a 300–350-word visual analysis of the selected design from Task 1.
- Include reference links when applicable.
2.1 ARTWORK

2.2 PHASE 1 — OBSERVATION
This artwork is in landscape format. There is a large animal skeleton with a tiny humanoid figure in the centre of the artwork, surrounded by withered trees and other vegetation on the sides. There is a pool of water at the bottom of the image. There are grainy particle effects scattered throughout the piece. This artwork is darker around the sides and bottom, while lighter in the centre and on top. This artwork is largely monochromatic, the main colour being green with minor red and yellow accents.
2.3 PHASE 2 — ANALYSIS
This artwork is asymmetrically balanced and utilises the rule of thirds, with the skeleton landing on one of the rule of thirds' intersections. Emphasis is placed on the animal skeleton, which is around the centre of the artwork. The skeleton also contrasts against the lighter background. The monochromatic colour palette of the artwork creates a sense of oneness and unity, bringing harmony to the overall composition. The red of the mushrooms and the yellow of the humanoid figure create variation in the composition (harmony). From the scale of the skeleton and humanoid figure, the viewer can infer that the skeleton is either very big, or the figure is very small. A repetition of trees can be found from the sides to the background.
2.4 PHASE 3 — INTERPRETATION
Anton Fadeev's work often follows themes of environmentalism and self-destruction. In the case of Poison Swamps (Figure 2.1-1), it follows both.
The subjects in his environmental pieces — which tend to be humans and animals — showcase the sheer vastness of nature compared to humanity (e.g. Figure 2.4-1).

On the other hand, the self-destruction aspect of his work shows the consequences of human actions biting them in the back (e.g. Figure 2.4-2).

Based on his previous work, I believe that Poison Swamps is a portrayal of humanity's self-destruction through the environment, how we have forgotten that we are a part of the environment we exploit and harm. It is a warning that we are the harbingers of our doom and that we only have ourselves to blame when future generations inherit a ruined Earth.
3.0 FEEDBACK
3.1 WEEK 3
Specific Feedback:
- Phase 1 & 2:
- Nicely done.
- Design principles are clearly stated and described.
- Additional design principles found can be added to Task 1.
- Phase 3 (progress: up till Figure 2.4-2):
- Nicely done.
- A final conclusion will wrap it up just fine.
- After returning from Osaka (Week 5), let Dr Jinchi take a final look.
4.0 REFLECTION
4.1 EXPERIENCE
As in Task 1, pretty alright and doable. I've got nothing notable to comment on.
4.2 OBSERVATIONS
It takes going into the details to see the bigger picture sometimes. I found a lot more design principles in Poison Swamps when I started the analysing process compared to when I was simply observing it in Task 1.
